This vase is part of a series completed for a public art project associated with an international university program called INTO. We interviewed dozens of students from around the world and asked them what they carry of their culture when they travel abroad. We created five vases based on cultures from China, Japan, Indonesia, The Middle East, and the USA.

Each vase shape is based on the cultures of people we interviewed. The sculptural portion attached to the vase is based on the answers from the students we interviewed, often stories or legends from their culture.

In this case, the culture is the Middle East. One student spoke about a centuries-old tradition, dating from before Muhammed, of painting the hands of the bride and groom before the wedding. The vase shape is a traditional shape from the region with Escher-esque hands painting each other.
