Moon Vase

$35,000.00

Limited edition bronze vase (statue not included). May be wall mounted or sit on a flat surface. Medium bright finish as shown with wax coating. Allow 8-12 weeks for delivery.

This vase is part of a series completed for a public art project associated with an international university program called INTO. We interviewed dozens of students from around the world and asked them what they carry of their culture when they travel abroad. We created five vases based on cultures from China, Japan, Indonesia, The Middle East, and the USA.

Each vase shape is based on the cultures of people we interviewed. The sculptural portion attached to the vase is based on the answers from the students we interviewed, often stories or legends from their culture.

In this case, the pattern on the vase is the topography of the moon. One student told us of a myth of a woman who drank a magic elixir and became immortally joined to the moon. Part of the Autumn Festival in China is based on the myth. We found a high-definition topographical map of the moon on NASA's website and used computer software to create an exaggerated but otherwise accurate "model" of the moon's surface. The shape of the vase is a traditional Chinese form.
