This vase is part of a series completed for a public art project associated with an international university program called INTO. We interviewed dozens of students from around the world and asked them what they carry of their culture when they travel abroad. We created five vases based on cultures from China, Japan, Indonesia, The Middle East, and the USA.

Each vase shape is based on the cultures of people we interviewed. The sculptural portion attached to the vase is based on the answers from the students we interviewed, often stories or legends from their culture.

This vase is based on what the American students said is unique about their culture. Their answer "creativity and innovation" was the basis for research on uniquely American inventions. Ultimately we chose the electric guitar, with its origins in Jazz and Rock, which helped to shape the culture of the USA for decades. The vase shape comes from ancient Greece, chosen for USA's ties to Greek Democracy.
